A new limited edition writing instrument brings together two giants: the art of writing coupled with the art of making tyres.

Since its creation in 1924, the Montblanc Meisterstück has been regarded as one of the most beautiful expressions of traditional European craftsmanship. It is through the uncompromising skill of the Montblanc masters and the 100+ steps required to craft each writing instrument that this icon of writing culture lives on today. The passion for perfection and crafted details apparent in this process is what binds Montblanc and Pirelli, the global high value tyre manufacturer founded almost 150 years ago, in 1872, with both brands committed to craftsmanship and refining the skills of their master craftspeople through generations. With the new Meisterstück Great Masters Pirelli Limited Edition 1872, Montblanc unites the art of writing with the art of making tyres, and the unique heritage of two pioneering companies.

In addition to a common commitment to the continuous pursuit of one of the highest quality and performance, Pirelli and Montblanc are further connected by the material that defined their origin stories: rubber. Pirelli began by manufacturing rubber products of all kinds, while the founders of Montblanc made their first writing instruments from ebonite, also known as hard rubber obtained by vulcanizing natural rubber. As a result, the signature colour of rubber, black, defined the iconic looks of both brands alongside red as a contrasting colour used from their early beginnings – Montblanc with its early fountain pen Rouge et Noir, and Pirelli by establishing red as an iconic colour for the brand with the exact shade codified in the 1990s to ensure its correct use.

Crafted from black rubber, the cap and barrel of the Meisterstück Great Masters Pirelli Limited Edition 1872 reflects this look and these two colours are brought together by narrow red rings adding a dynamic accent to the black cone and cap top, which is crowned by the Montblanc emblem in precious mother-of-pearl.

The history of the Pirelli company is closely tied to the history of the modern automobile. Today, cutting edge technology, high-end production excellence and passion for innovation remain the chief guiding principles for Pirelli and the deciding factors for their famed performance on streets and racetracks around the world.  The sgorbiatori are true masters of their craft, expertly carving the virtually developed treads by hand in the surface of the prototype tyres. Their manual skill allows a high level of precision and flexibility, especially in the early phases of development when swift adjustments of tread design are crucial. In reference to the craftsmanship of the sgorbiatori, the matt rubber on the writing instrument’s cap and barrel is engraved with a  pattern that contrasts with the deep-black gloss of the ruthenium-coated fittings.

The engraved pattern on the cap and barrel of the Meisterstück Great Masters Pirelli Limited Edition 1872 is inspired by a historic graphic treatment of the PIRELLI logo, dating back to 1966. . The legendary striking ‘P’ in use since 1908 and symbolizing the elastic qualities of rubber, is also engraved on the handcrafted Au 750 solid gold nib above a stylised running tyre with the Montblanc emblem at its centre. Ultimate commitment to quality standards, every nib is crafted by hand, from the engraving of the Au 750 solid gold nib to skilled processes such as welding the iridium point and slitting the nib to testing the sound of the nib on paper to ensure the most ideal ink flow.

Shaped with great care and meticulous dedication, the Meisterstück Great Masters Pirelli Limited Edition 1872 celebrates a mutual devotion to craftsmanship, precision and quality passed down through generations of highly skilled and passionate craftspeople.
